About Kundalini Yoga:

Kundalini yoga is known as the yoga of awareness and is considered the fastest and most direct way to achieve spiritual elevation. It integrates mantra, meditation & movement to stimulate the organs, glands & nervous system. Kundalini energy is dormant energy. Through a series of vigorous postures and breathing, we will activate our Kundalini and experience our inner Divinity! As physical and energetic blockages are cleared we are able to experience bliss, peace and self-realization!

Winter solstice is a time to sow the seeds we wish to harvest in spring. It is a time of rebirth and renewal. Together, we will cultivate our inner landscapes using visualization, ritual, and Kundalini yoga. We will use the energy of the solstice to sow the seeds we wish to harvest in our lives and manifest our intentions for the New Year!

The awakening of Kundalini causes a transformation and transcendence in life.

Hello Beautiful and Aura Energizer video snack to spread JOY!

Exciting news! Robin Downes' Yoga Flava is now blogging for "Hello Beautiful". "Hello Beautiful" is one of the platforms of Interactive One, which also hosts the television network TV One.

May your Aura (energy field) spread your JOY to the world!

Strengthen your resolve to keep your JOY no matter what outside circumstances may distract you.
EnJOY this Yoga Flava Video Snack "AURA ENERGIZER" to help
prevent being drained by other people. Uplift the vibe of those around you as we gather to give thanks and celebrate this holiday season.

What is the Aura?
by Aisha Brown
The aura is a field of energy that surrounds the physical body of living beings as well as objects. For the most part, it is invisible to the naked eye, although some people with highly developed abilities are able to perceive it. The aura is described as having various colors and layers that extend outwards from the body.

During our daily interactions, our auras intertwine with those in our surrounding environment. This is actually a normal part of communication. The problem occurs when our energy field becomes permanently entangled with another person's. How do you know when your aura is too deeply enmeshed with another individual? For one thing, you can't stop thinking about that person! You may experience their thoughts and emotions as though they were your own. It is even possible to pick up on the physical pain that another person is feeling and match it within your own body.

Ways to Cleanse and Revitalize Your Aura
1) Physically remove yourself from whatever person or place you feel is having too strong of an effect on you.
2) Take a shower-water is cleansing and healing. Better yet, take an Epsom salt bath to clear any negative vibrations. If you can, take a swim in the ocean.
3) Practice deep breathing exercises.
4) Play uplifting, soothing music (save the death metal for another time).
5) Carry or wear a clear quartz crystal.

West Coast Joy, Pain & Rejuvenation

I am still reflecting on how healing my recent Autumn Rhythm Rejuvenation journey to the West Coast has been. The first part of my trip took me to San Diego, for the joyful wedding celebration of Mr. & Mrs. Ellotia Hargrove III. It was wonderful to reconnect with my family members.

I shared a Yoga session with my cousin, Cynthia, as we discussed our plans for our bi-coastal "Big 'O' Birthday Bash" that we are planning for May of 2010.

God bless my Aunt Marcelett, who is winning her battle with cancer. My mother (Auntie's sister) lost her battle to cancer in 1998, which inspired my focus on and dedication to wellness. Auntie has been wearing my Mom's wig (kinda deep).

My adventure continued in Marina Del Rey, CA, which is my favorite part of the Los Angeles area. I checked in on my storage unit to retrieve some of my treasures, as I continue to downsize and organize my life. The rest of the time I spent soaking up the ocean side vibe. I found myself slowing down from the fast-paced energy of New York and all the festivities of the wedding.

When I checked my RSVP for the upcoming Yoga Flava Session, I was delighted to find a message from my dear friend, celebrity chef Kai Chase.

Kai was Michael Jackson's personal chef at the time of his unfortunate passing on June 25th. Other notable clients include President Barack Obama, Oscar-winning actor Jamie Foxx, comedian Steve Harvey, FOX Television, Red Bull Corporation and Sony Pictures. Kai is currently working on two exciting projects: a cookbook and a cooking television show.

Hi Robin:

I definitely will be there! and I'm bringing a friend. Soooooo looking forward to it! You're the best and I am so happy to have you back here in L.A. to feed us mind, body & spirit!!

Love you,
Kai Chase

Kai sees the world through "feeding" and is sincere in her love of food and being a chef. We learned a lot from each other when we worked together as a wellness team for a V.I.P. client. I plan on putting together an event to showcase her sensually delicious dishes, such as "Nibbles" and "Skinny Dipping" in February 2010 for my "Sensual Healing with Yoga Flava Workshop." She is such a dear friend, and I just want to share that she has been in need of healing support to deal with the grief of the shocking untimely and tragic death of the King of Pop. Kai mentioned that during the frenzy of media coverage that she received as a witness during MJ's final days, no one took the time to ask her how SHE was doing. Please keep Kai in your thoughts and prayers. All this to say, I was honored to be of service to her and the others that showed up for Yoga Flava's Autumn Rhythm Rejuvenation Workshop.

In order to be of service for the session, which was held at The Creative Chakra & Spa*, it was essential that I get myself into a deeply relaxed state.
I indulged in the tranquil environment of this charming sanctuary. I relaxed in the sauna, and as my pedicure was finishing up, the participants began arriving. There were several beginners, as well as one person with a stiff and painful knee. the Autumn Rhythm Rejuvenation session began, I got lost in the process of intuitively connecting with the needs of each participant and helping them get in sync with their authentic rhythm, flow and life force. I massaged the Autumn Equinox Essential Oil Blend to their necks. It was glorious to watch the tension melt away from stressed out bodies. At the end, I was able to bask in the sweet stillness and serenity that was reflected back to me by the students.

The rest of my journey I spent finding more quiet time for reflection, prayer and meditation as I headed back to the Empire state. Take some time to rejuvenate while you find joy in the Autumn Rhythm.

*Thank you: Cheryl Stone, Adlai Hayes, X, Sandie (Creative Chakra & Spa)

Sending vibes of rejuvenation - - Robin

Take A Breather with Yoga Flava Video Snack

Take a breather this Fall to prepare for the holiday season and a New Year for a new you! Without the breath, we cease to exist. Most of us take breathing for granted. When you connect to your breath, you connect to your life force.

Fall is the season when certain disorders are more prevalent than at any other time of the year. Asthma, allergies and skin disorders can affect almost any one susceptible to them. Prevention is key. The lung and large intestine are the internal organs related to Fall. These organs are associated with the emotion of "taking in" and “letting go.” Taking in through the nose and mouth such as the breath of life is important as we transition from the hot season of Summer to the cool season of Fall. The nose is the opening to the lungs, therefore colds and flu are easier to catch. Keep your nose and sinuses clean and clear. Focus on breathing with the diaphragm of the respiratory system.

The diaphragm (pronounced: dye-uh-fram), which separates the chest from the abdomen, plays a lead role in breathing. The diaphragm is the primary breathing muscle. It is believed that many people have little sensory awareness of their diaphragm and have almost no idea of how to engage it more fully, or even of how it works. Due to the increasing stress of modern life and the resulting over-stimulation of the sympathetic nervous system, (as well as of the idealised hard, flat belly) many people carry excessive tension in the belly, chest, and back. This tension makes it difficult for the diaphragm to move freely through its full range of motion.

Take a few minutes to view and then participate in a taste of this Yoga Flava video snack entitled "Deep Diaphragmatic Breathing:"

The Yoga Flava video snack is an excerpt from the full length DVD "Robin Downes' Yoga Flava for Relaxation." Give yourself and / or a friend the gift of relaxation.

Autumnal Equinox '09 - New Season New Flava!

Today is the Autumnal Equinox 2009, marking the beginning of a new season and new flava! This is a time to seek to restore balance in the world and in ourselves - mind, body, breath and spirit. "Equinox" is from the Latin word "aquinoctium" meaning equal night. An equinox occurs when the sun is over the equator and hours of the day and night are equal - 12 hours each.

Find your balance by sitting or standing quietly with your eyes closed, breathing deeply and being mindful of your body. Check in with yourself, how do you feel? Now bring your hands to your heart center and be mindful of feeling balanced. Let this be a gentle reminder to you of grace, beauty and balance that comes with the autumnal equinox - between day and night, light and dark, activity and rest.

My celebration began last Saturday at the V.I.P. Private Penthouse Party sponsored by
Maren Good of Good Scents, Inc. / Scent and Sound Works. Check out the following video:

1. Go for a nature walk and enjoy the changing scenery.

2. Go to your local farmers market and buy the seasonal fruits and vegetables (apples, pumpkin, squash, etc.)

3. Create a Cornucopia (Harvest Basket or Bowl) gather items from you nature walk, farmers market visit and around your home.

4. Rest in the contentment knowing you have collected that which you need.

As a African American, I pondered what this season of harvest meant to me, being mindful of the harvest of cotton and such that slaves were forced to be a part of. I came across Oprah Winfrey's quote in a Forbes Magazine interview "I had to get rid of that slave mentality". Today is the Autumnal Equinox 2009, change of season, change mentality to HARVEST PROSPERITY CONSCIOUSNESS. Celebrate the abundance you already have and open up to the possibilities ahead. Yoga for Prosperity Sessions will be beginning in October, let me know of your interest as I create the new schedule.

In the mean time, check out Robin Downes'Yoga Flava home study products and the Yoga Flava web site.

Next upcoming event - Yoga Flava up in club Katra, Oct. 2nd. (more info.coming soon)

Sending peace, prosperity and positive vibes... Robin

Origins of Yoga
It is a little-known fact that Yoga first began in Africa, specifically Kemet (ancient Egypt). Yoga, which means union, is for everybody. I would like to see people of African descent reclaim this ancient holistic practice for themselves and incorporate it into their modern lives.

The young Egyptians (Kamites) of Northeastern Africa were educated in a system of higher knowledge called the "Mystery System" by Egyptologists. They had to acquire a high level of competency in Yoga before they were considered mentally and spiritually prepared to master the rigors of mathematics, engineering, medicine, astronomy, astrology, architecture, literature, religion, metaphysics, ethics and philosophy.

According to the book The Metu Neter by Ra UN Nefer Amen, these ancient Africans migrated to India and became what are now known as the Dravidian Indians. They passed on teachings and spiritual practices that later evolved into Hindu beliefs and yoga practices.

Yoga in the Modern World
Many of us are living with dis-ease, a fast track life that leaves little time for self-nurturing. People of color often have an especially hard time in modern society living up to expectations and illusions created by the mainstream media. The African-American community has high instances of obesity, hypertension, diabetes, anxiety and depression. Yoga is very soothing to the mind, body and emotions, which helps lower stress and blood pressure levels. It can also deliver a good cardiovascular workout that can help you lose weight while strengthening and toning your entire body. It can also help you sleep more soundly, leading to clearer thinking and awareness.

Yoga Flava promotes a style that includes soulful grooves and healing moves.

Breathing deeply, combined with movement, helps to naturally relax, de-stress, re-energize, and rejuvenate the mind, body and spirit. What are you waiting for?
