Tips To Recreate Your Resolutions - Late Winter Wellness

This winter has been a whirl wind for me.  Filled with unexpected events and transitions that gave me reason to pause and recreate my New Year's resolutions.  At this point, on the east coast, it has been a pretty mild winter.  I started off the new year encouraging a lot of self care for winter wellness.  With these remaining weeks of the season, here are some tips to wind down from winter before we prepare for spring.  Continue to nurture yourself and fill up your inner strength so that you can be full to bloom into spring.

New Year’s resolutions for weight loss are mostly doomed to fail.  Trying to lose weight in winter is the hardest, and most unnatural, time of year to reduce your calorie intake.  The human body naturally tries to keep weight on in the winter as a survival technique.

Related Article:  3 Action Steps to Release Worry And Enjoy Living

Your body goes through seasonal changes just like trees, plants, and hibernating animals. The human body uses calories to keep us warm and naturally holds onto fat to help us weather the freezing weather. Since calories = heat = winter survival, eating gives your body the fuel it needs to protect itself from cold winds, frigid temperatures.

Related Article:  Motivate Your Creative Power

Limiting your calorie intake in the winter flips an invisible switch that triggers your body’s natural survival mechanisms to store fuel like a squirrel hiding nuts.  The crazy part is, restricting your food intake starting January 1st can actually cause your body to create more fat storage.

Related Article:  Self Love

So wait until springtime for a real cleansing and calorie restriction program. Honor your human nature and give your body the calories it needs to get through winter successfully.

February is a great time to recreate your Resolution about food, supplements and health: Decide to transform your menus into natural, real meals filled with whole foods and seasonal ingredients. Get acquainted with whole grains, beans, seasonal veggies from your area, nuts, seeds, and sea vegetables. Create a new habit of including whole grains, beans, and steamed leafy greens at least twice a day. Use the seasonal produce available in your area to bring balance and energy to your body while you remove the junky, processed, and packaged foods this winter.

By changing the quality of your meals, rather than focusing on the quantity of calories and restricting yourself during this season, you can create a total body transformation that will give you the energy you need to make big changes to your weight in the spring when cleansing and reducing is more appropriate. The cool thing is this: when you start shifting your foods to be natural and high-quality, your weight will slowly start reducing on its own! But not in a forced, deprivation style. You’ll get balanced. Your energy will be better. You’ll sleep better and have an easier time kicking caffeine and sugar cravings.

If you want to make this shift with expert guidance, camaraderie, and support, you can Save the dates: March 23, 24, 25, - Spring It On 2012! - "Restore By The Shore" Join the event page on Facebook to let me know you are interested in attending.

Motivate Your Creative Power With Yoga & Cease Fibroids

This beautiful image connected with my spirit today.  In my search for inspiration, creative power and healing - Bastet was introduced to me as a Goddess we can invoke to help balance our sacral chakra. She is the Egyptian who manages dancing, animals, freedom, humor, joy, magic, overcoming and playfulness. Her symbols include the pyramid, sun and moon and her totem is cat.

This is a very personal blog for me and I am sharing based on the insight from my meditation this morning.  The meditation was specifically about laying hands on my pelvis which has been developing a large hard mass, after a recent doctor's exam she suggested the possibility of fibroids. I have a ultra sound scheduled for next week to clarify the diagnosis.  I have begun to research solutions to cease the growth of fibroids.

Also Read:  3 Action Steps To Avoid Worry and Enjoy Living

Fibroids are a benign tumor of muscular and fibrous tissues, typically developing in the wall of the uterus.
Metaphysically speaking - fibroids devolop in the Sacral Chakra (energy center just below the navel)

The Sacral Chakra is associated with Self Respect.
When it is in balance we are fully able to express and feel our emotions, we feel happy and confident with who we are.
An imbalance will first resonate as a tingle, ache or sensitivity in the sacral region. (Lower abdomen).
If the issue is left unattended to, may lead on to more serious issues such as.
Pre-menstrual syndrome, problems with menstrual flow, uterine fibroids, ovarian cysts, irritable bowel syndrome, endometriosis, testicular disease, prostatic disease, low back pain.

Balance Your Sacral Chakra with Creativity

When our sacral chakra is balanced, we will have overall feelings of creativity and production.

ORANGE relates to the SACRAL chakra which is situated in the lower abdomen of the human body.  Orange relates to self respect. Having the ability to give ourselves the freedom to be ourselves, to have and respect our own boundaries and therefore, be able to respect those of others. Orange relates to our ability to "give and take" within our relationships with others.
When this chakra is balanced the positive aspects of this colour will prevail. However, an imbalance in this chakra can produce the negative aspects of this colour.

So energetically speaking, fibroid tumors denote a tumorization process of old, negative, toxic thoughts, emotions, or feelings that are clumped together and proliferate. The more old, stale, toxic thoughts and emotions (hurts and pains) you embrace and hold on to in the heart and mind, the more your physical tumors below (womb area) proliferate. Again, “as above, so below.” Metaphysics!

Before a physical fibroid tumor can manifest, there is always an emotional, mental, and/or psychological fibroid tumor that consists of old hurts and wounds pertaining to:

RELATIONSHIPS (past mate(s) cheated on you; past mate(s) harmed, abused, and/or disrespected you; father or paternal guardian abandoned you, etc., which leads to feelings of mistrust of males, insecurity issues, etc.)

Sacral Chakra Exercises:This chakra is fed by developing support systems and boundaries. Taking responsibility for what is happening in your life and "owning" up to your downfalls. Feeding your creative side and taking care of your body.  Chakracise your sacral chakra with pelvic thrusts and circular pelvis movements - Yoga Flava style - for sensual healing - check out this video - - -

This post is the manifestation of my creative power!  Circumstances had recently slowed me down and from this point forward I will continue to enthusiastically strengthen and heal. The photo of the Egyptian Goddess (Pictured Above, Bastet)- reminded me of the Fierce Urban Goddess (Pictured below,Me)

When I look at this picture of me, over a decade ago, I see a confident, creative woman. Yes, I knew my breast were large (compared to the typical thin yoginis being promoted at the time) and I embraced all that I was at the moment - The journey continues - - -

3rd of 10 Week Program: Seated Postures / Yoga Sutra - Contentment

Black Yoga Instructors You Should Know

Seated Postures

Yoga Exercises - Seated Poses

There are many different Yoga Poses which are performed while sitting. Some of them are classic postures which are usually done in Meditation, while others are performed for their therapeutic effects. No matter what Seated Pose you want to do, just make sure to listen to your body and stay within your limits. Know the various Seated Poses in this section:

Seated Poses - Easy Pose (Sukhasana) Easy Pose (Sukhasana)
This is one of the classic Meditative Poses and is usually performed after doing the Corpse Pose. The Easy Pose helps in straightening the spine, slowing down metabolism, promoting inner tranquility, and keeping your mind still.

Seated Poses - Spread Leg Forward Fold (Upavista Konasana) Spread Leg Forward Fold (Upavista Konasana)
The Spread Leg Forward Fold is a Yoga Posture which works primarily on the hamstrings and adductors. This energizes the body and promotes inner calmness. In this section, know more about this exercise and learn how to perform it properly.

Seated Poses - Hero Pose (Virasana) Hero Pose (Virasana)
One of the fundamental seated postures is the Hero Pose. This serves as the initial position for several Asanas. It strengthens the arches of the feet, stretches the ankles, and improves posture. This Yoga Pose is ideal for people who have flat feet.

Seated Poses - Lotus Pose (Padmasana) Lotus Pose (Padmasana)
The Lotus Yoga Pose is usually done in Meditation. It is a classic seated posture which strengthens your ankles and knees, enhances concentration, and improves flexibility of your legs. Know how to perform the Lotus Pose in this section. (Read more)

Yoga Sutra -
Santosha (सन्तोष) (contentment) is one of the niyamas of Yoga as listed by Patanjali.[1] Contentment is variously described, but can be thought of as not coveting more than you have and is therefore very different to the way some modern western societies encourage the population to acquire more 'stuff' to achieve contentment. It may be seen as renunciation (of the need to acquire).
The alternate spelling of Samtosha is also used.

There are several ways to cultivate contentment. We can practice yoga postures, pranayama (deep breathing) and meditation to keep our energies balanced and our mind serene--qualities that lead toward contentment. We can keep a journal of things for which we are grateful. The deepest contentment comes at those moments when we feel we are in the flow of life, when we are communing with nature, when our energies are positive and when we have no desires. By being conscious of these moments, we can strengthen, expand and sustain the feeling of contentment for longer periods of time. Even when we are surrounded by chaos and disharmony, we can return to this feeling and find ourselves back in a place of peace and quietude. The state of contentment becomes a familiar place when we observe it throughout the day. The key is to bring our attention fully to it when it occurs and not hurry on to the next activity. And by affirming our place in the cosmos, our connection to others and our interface with the divine, it is harder to lose our way when disturbances arise.  (Read more)

Inpirational Poem "Promise Yourself" (Read More)

Promise yourself to be strong that nothing can disturb your peace of mind.
To talk health, happiness and prosperity to every person you meet.
To make all your friends feel that there is something in them.
To look at the sunny side of everything and make your optimism come true.
To think only the best, to work only for the best and expect only the best.
To be just as enthusiastic about the success of others as you are about your own.
To forget the mistakes of the past and press on to the greater achievements of the future.
To wear a cheerful countenance at all times and give every living creature you meet a smile.
To give so much time to the improvement of yourself that you have no time to criticize others.
To be too large for worry, too noble for anger, too strong for fear and too happy to permit the presence of trouble.

Melt Winter Tension: Sensual Spring Shoulder Moves

The winter chill kept your shoulders up by your ears, with Spring officially arriving on March 20th, it's time to melt the unconscious Winter tension
that has built up in the shoulders, neck and back. Feel better with these sensual spring moves. Spring it On!

Photobucket

The following is the text breakdown of what you can do. Also be sure to view the Yoga Flava Video Snack at the bottom of this blog and join me in this healing practice.

Standing Forward Bend

Uttanasana (Sanskrit - ancient east indian name of Yoga Pose)
(OOT-tan-AHS-ahna)
ut = intense
tan = to stretch or extend

Step by Step

Stand in Mountain Pose (Tadasana), hands on hips. Exhale and bend forward from the hip joints, not from the waist. As you descend draw the front torso out of the groins and open the space between the pubis and top sternum. As in all the forward bends, the emphasis is on lengthening the front torso as you move more fully into the position.

If possible, with your knees straight, bring your palms or finger tips to the floor slightly in front of or beside your feet, or bring your palms to the backs of your ankles. If this isn't possible, cross your forearms and hold your elbows. Press the heels firmly into the floor and lift the sitting bones toward the ceiling. Turn the top thighs slightly inward.

With each inhalation in the pose, lift and lengthen the front torso just slightly; with each exhalation release a little more fully into the forward bend. In this way the torso oscillates almost imperceptibly with the breath. Let your head hang from the root of the neck, which is deep in the upper back, between the shoulder blades.

Forward Fold (Uttanasana) can be used as a resting position between the standing poses. Stay in the pose for 30 seconds to 1 minute. It can also be practiced as a pose in itself.

Don't roll the spine to come up. Instead bring your hands back onto your hips and reaffirm the length of the front torso. Then press your tailbone down and into the pelvis and come up on an inhalation with a long front torso.

Shoulder Rolls
Roll the shoulders down and back, starting with small circles and working up to larger circles. Do 10 circles backwards and then repeat forward circles.

To see how it's done have a taste of this Yoga Flava Video Snack; Forward Fold and Shoulder Rolls:

PUT YOUR BACK IN IT - Yoga & Sexual Union

The meaning of the word YOGA is "to join together," to "make union." In the Kama Sutra (The art of making love) and Tantric tradition sexual union is considered the highest form of Yoga. In all transcendental sexual experiences a healthy and relaxed body is an ally for exctasy and liberation. Many of the Yoga poses were inspired by flowers, animals and other creatures whose name they bear. The following yoga poses are entitled Cat and Cow, promotes a sense of ease for the spine, so you can put your back in it.

Cat Pose: marjarasana
Marjari= cat

Cow Pose: bitilasana

The Cat-Cow pose combination is a tremendously popular and beneficial exercise used in yoga, Pilates, and other forms of physical exercise. This simple pose combination helps to stretch the back and relieve pain, strengthen the core muscles of the abdomen and the back, increase coordination, and energize the body.

Cat Cow pose benefits:
Stabilizes the sacrum to release lower back pain
Supports back by engaging abs
Stretches the low, mid and upper back, the front torso, the hips and the neck
Loosens spine
Stretches hips
Massages and stimulates kidneys and adrenal glands, and tones the uterus
Creates emotional balance
Relieves stress and calms the mind

Contraindications:
People with neck injuries should be sure to keep the head in line with the torso.
Getting into the Cat and Cow poses: Step by step

Step One (preparation): Begin in “tabletop” position: your hands on the ground at shoulder width, elbows and shoulders in line with the hands and your knees on the ground hip distance apart and directly under the hips. Your spine should be neutral and the eyes will gaze towards the floor slightly in front of the fingertips.

Step Two (Cat Pose): On an exhalation, begin to round your spine towards the ceiling, engaging your stomach muscles to pull the belly towards the back body and tucking your head and chin towards the chest. The gaze should be toward the chest and belly, yet avoid forcing the chin to meet the chest. Feel the expansion across the shoulder blades. If rounding the very top of the back is difficult, ask a friend or yoga teacher to lay her hands just above and between the shoulder blades to help you activate this region.

Step Three (Cow Pose): On an inhalation, drop your belly toward the floor while lifting your sit bones and your chest towards the ceiling. Your gaze can either be directly in front of you or towards the ceiling. Keep the shoulder blades down and back away from the ears.

You can repeat this sequence a few times, making sure to follow the breath, inhaling into cow and exhaling into cat. You may wish to finish this sequence by resting in child’s pose.

Check out the following Yoga Flava Video Snack for the demonstration.

West Coast Joy, Pain & Rejuvenation

I am still reflecting on how healing my recent Autumn Rhythm Rejuvenation journey to the West Coast has been. The first part of my trip took me to San Diego, for the joyful wedding celebration of Mr. & Mrs. Ellotia Hargrove III. It was wonderful to reconnect with my family members.

I shared a Yoga session with my cousin, Cynthia, as we discussed our plans for our bi-coastal "Big 'O' Birthday Bash" that we are planning for May of 2010.

God bless my Aunt Marcelett, who is winning her battle with cancer. My mother (Auntie's sister) lost her battle to cancer in 1998, which inspired my focus on and dedication to wellness. Auntie has been wearing my Mom's wig (kinda deep).

*************************************************************************

My adventure continued in Marina Del Rey, CA, which is my favorite part of the Los Angeles area. I checked in on my storage unit to retrieve some of my treasures, as I continue to downsize and organize my life. The rest of the time I spent soaking up the ocean side vibe. I found myself slowing down from the fast-paced energy of New York and all the festivities of the wedding.

When I checked my RSVP for the upcoming Yoga Flava Session, I was delighted to find a message from my dear friend, celebrity chef Kai Chase.

Kai was Michael Jackson's personal chef at the time of his unfortunate passing on June 25th. Other notable clients include President Barack Obama, Oscar-winning actor Jamie Foxx, comedian Steve Harvey, FOX Television, Red Bull Corporation and Sony Pictures. Kai is currently working on two exciting projects: a cookbook and a cooking television show.

Kai Chase wrote
at 5:39am on October 24th, 2009
Hi Robin:

I definitely will be there! and I'm bringing a friend. Soooooo looking forward to it! You're the best and I am so happy to have you back here in L.A. to feed us mind, body & spirit!!

Love you,
Kai Chase

Kai sees the world through "feeding" and is sincere in her love of food and being a chef. We learned a lot from each other when we worked together as a wellness team for a V.I.P. client. I plan on putting together an event to showcase her sensually delicious dishes, such as "Nibbles" and "Skinny Dipping" in February 2010 for my "Sensual Healing with Yoga Flava Workshop." She is such a dear friend, and I just want to share that she has been in need of healing support to deal with the grief of the shocking untimely and tragic death of the King of Pop. Kai mentioned that during the frenzy of media coverage that she received as a witness during MJ's final days, no one took the time to ask her how SHE was doing. Please keep Kai in your thoughts and prayers. All this to say, I was honored to be of service to her and the others that showed up for Yoga Flava's Autumn Rhythm Rejuvenation Workshop.

********************************************************************************

In order to be of service for the session, which was held at The Creative Chakra & Spa*, it was essential that I get myself into a deeply relaxed state.
I indulged in the tranquil environment of this charming sanctuary. I relaxed in the sauna, and as my pedicure was finishing up, the participants began arriving. There were several beginners, as well as one person with a stiff and painful knee.

Ahhh...as the Autumn Rhythm Rejuvenation session began, I got lost in the process of intuitively connecting with the needs of each participant and helping them get in sync with their authentic rhythm, flow and life force. I massaged the Autumn Equinox Essential Oil Blend to their necks. It was glorious to watch the tension melt away from stressed out bodies. At the end, I was able to bask in the sweet stillness and serenity that was reflected back to me by the students.

The rest of my journey I spent finding more quiet time for reflection, prayer and meditation as I headed back to the Empire state. Take some time to rejuvenate while you find joy in the Autumn Rhythm.

*Thank you: Cheryl Stone, Adlai Hayes, X, Sandie (Creative Chakra & Spa)
