Abraham McDonald's Full Body Cleanse with DHerbs [VIDEO]

Island Def Jam R&B recording artist Abraham McDonald  has chosen to share the joys and pains of his Full Body Cleanse journey via his blog The Skin I Live In; 100 Pounds and Down. As a result of his commitment to the Full Body Cleanse with DHerbs, he has lost 30 pounds in 20 days.  On Day 12, Abraham was open and honest about pulling up to a McDonald’s drive through and having to find the inner strength to pull out of line.  With the help of God and his DHerbs Life Coach, McDonald has been able to meet each challenge head on and remain steadfast.

“Make no mistake - I’m happy with my choice to eat clean and feel that it’s the best thing for me. I’ve begun to see the changes in just a short while and I feel them too. How else would I be able to run from rehearsals to stage, filming and teaching to boxing and workout sessions if I didn’t have a new-found energy.  The hard times come with it is all.”

Check out my Yoga Flava TV interview with Abraham McDonald during his visit to the Yoga Flava Spring Retreat 2012 and recent phone interview with DHerbs Life Coach Ahman:

For the past 9 years, DHerbs has made superior-quality products using only the purest ingredients found in nature.  They now have separated themselves from the pack and established themselves as the largest African American owned Herbal Company in the country.  DHerbs philosophy has always been that only through proper digestion and a sensible diet can people obtain the nutrients necessary to improve our overall well being, and it is that philosophy that continues to enable customers to achieve and maintain the vibrant health they deserve.

Jupiter Goes Retrograde: Revisit Meditation

Just as I was getting ready for my "Fresh Start For Fall" campaign, I found out that Jupiter is in retrograde.

I thought I would focus on getting out and getting busy in the invigorating east coast Autumn season.  Instead, because of the retrograde, I discovered that this is a great time to slow down and take stock of what’s going on in your life. Explore your personal philosophy and spirituality.

JUPITER TURNS RETROGRADEOCTOBER 4 2012 through JANUARY 30 2013 ✭

A planet is described as retrograde when it appears to be moving backwards through the zodiac. This traditional concept arises in the illusory planetary motion created by the orbital rotation of the earth, with relation to other planets in our solar system. It's a bit like traveling on the road watching another car beside you: when the other car slows down, or you speed up, it looks as though the other car is moving backwards. So planets are never actually retrograde or stationary, they just seem that way, due to this optical illusion.  When Jupiter turns retrograde, the action of Jupiter is reversed so that the emphasis is upon inner awareness and inner growth.

The best mode to be in during a retrograde is one of "non-reaction", and with earth signs being impacted, physical environment will be changing continually during a retrograde. Treat the time period as a time of gathering information, yet because the information will be in constant change it would be like trying to comb your hair in a wind storm. Best to wait until the changes stop before attempting to make things orderly. Therefore, just let the winds of situations blow around you without reacting. Once the retrograde turns direct, take a look at the information that is still around at that time and go about putting everything in order, while maintaining the fine art of flexibility.

After some soul searching you may find that you’ve made less time for yourself and skipped meditation periods.  Jupiter retrograde will help you revisit your meditation practice and get it going again. You may also find that you develop an even better method of incorporating it in your life.

Deepak Chopra and Me, My Inspirations For The Journey Within

My Spiritual Guru, Deepak Chopra and Me
Recently, I was interviewed by aoinspiration.com for their YOGIS OF COLOR SERIES.  The first question was "When did yoga enter your life?"  I said 1994, because I was influenced by Deepak Chopra and his clear insight to the journey within.  Initially, I did not understand, at all, how those weird postures could help to still the mind.  Eventually, I learned that when you can release the unconscious tension in the body you can have a greater sense of ease - mind, body and spirit.

For those of you who know me, you know I come from a media background and my inspiration in media is Oprah Winfrey.  I was inspired by my trip to India in 1999.  So I wanted to share with you this link that ties several of my inspirations together:  FULL EPISODE: DEEPAK CHOPRA AND OPRAH IN INDIA "SUPER SOUL SUNDAY"

Deepak and Oprah
Additionally, my skills as an investigative reporter, I continue to research a deeper understanding of yoga and meditation and help to interpret it for others. I had seen an excerpt of this clip previously, and found the full version of this video presentation that I think is the best explanation of meditation. Check out: SPIRITUALITY REALITY POWER OF MEDITATION.

Robin and Yogi Horton

As I write this post, my spirit (or perhaps his spirit) reminds me of an early influence toward the inner journey and it was a former fiance, happy go lucky musician named Yogi Horton in 1981 who introduced me to meditation by gifting me a little Self Realization Fellowship meditation booklet.  He was 7 years older than me and explained how prayer and meditation helped to keep him centered while traveling the world as a musician. The seed was planted by Yogi (ironic, but yes his real name) and it was able to bloom with the guidance of Deepak.  Yogi is no longer with us on the physical realm, I am delighted to share his memory so his spirit lives on.  Inspiration is all around us, nurture the seed with a healthy mind, body and spirit so that it can bloom ...

When we die, we just no longer use the body for communication. We all co-exist within each other. We are all one - Deepak Chopra

What is Skype Your YogaFlava?

"Yoga" is an ancient science designed to restore the mind, body and soul (on both gross and subtle levels) to its connection with the source. It does this by massaging and cleansing unprocessed (blocked) emotion from your energy channels, while implementing techniques that cleanse and focus the breath, mind and nervous system. With clear channels and a steady breath, you are prepared to enter the practice of meditation so that you can experience your intellect free of corruption and begin to tap into that contemplative, raw, truth-touching, life-altering experience of what you are really all about.

"Flava" is a hip expression for contemporary style.  I will personalize a program for your style / level / health condition.

"Skype" is a revolutionary program that anyone can download onto their computers for free and use to video chat with anyone else who also has skype -world wide.
So put these two things together and we’ve got a revolutionary method of practicing yoga by bringing ancient science and modern technology together.

Imagine having you very own tailored yoga practice and imagine learning it in the comfort of your own private home.

Who is it for?
Skype your Yoga Flava is for practitioners of all levels, however if I find you to be extremely advanced I may prefer to teach you in person or otherwise will happily recommend a teacher who is more equipped to accommodate you than I.

How is it Done?
Each sequence is designed specifically for your unique mind, body and spirit. I have created a questionnaire designed to unearth energetic strengths and weaknesses that once completed allows me to gain the insight necessary for the creation of your practice.
I am able to lead you through your practice by verbally guiding you as well as visually demonstrating the asanas. And because I am able to watch you I can offer you verbal corrections, as well as explain to you what it is that we are doing, why we are doing it and how it is helping you.
1. All that you have to do is set up a consultation (email: robin@yogaflava.com) and I will email you a waiver and questionnaire. Once I receive you answers I can begin to review and summarize a yogic approach that is going to work best for you.

2. I will email you my findings and we can take a little time to delve into any areas that need clarification. We can do this consultation process via email or via skype so we have a chance to meet and you can make sure that you are happy with what I’m saying and you want to move forward with me.

3. Once we agree on a approach, I will design your method. Each sequence contains components of  asanas, pranayama, visualization and meditation techniques that address and nourish you personally in every way, internally and externally.

4. Then we set up a date for your first session, whenever you want.

Also read: Slow Summer Simmer To Soothe Your Soul

5. I call you on skype. You answer. We turn on our video cameras. You set your computer up on a table and I demonstrate and guide you through your practice.

This is a proven program. The system works. Though I am not there to work with you hands on, there is an element of empowerment delivered by making corrections on your own via verbal communication. This empowerment is key to your growth.

It will take work and dedication on your part, but you can do this and I’m here to help you every step of the way.

What You Will Personally Gain
  • Clarity on what is causing you stress and discomfort in your life and how to start fixing it now.
  • A firm grasp of the yogic techniques that are best for your unique mind and body.
  • The ability to start off (or changing foot) on the right track so you can stop wasting time and wondering if you are heading in the right direction with yoga.
  • Confidence in taking proactive action in initiating a deeply beautiful spiritual and physical regime.
  • Knowledge of your temperament and why harnessing this knowledge is the cornerstone to your yogic success.
  • Knowledge of your dosha, and how this guides you in the direction of reclaiming perfect balance.
  • The realization that there is something more, something deeper and how to access it.
  • Exhilaration at the realization that you actually CAN make any move you want to make in your iife.
So what do I need to do it?
  • A good internet connection.
  • Skype.
  • A video camera for your computer.
  • Speakers are a bonus.
  • A private space of comfortable temperature in your home where you can be free of distractions (kids, phone, etc.) for the duration of the practice.
  • A Paypal account.

Summer Slow Simmer To Soothe Your Soul

Yoga Flava with Robin Downes, Summer 2012
Those "Back To School" advertisements are the reminder that summer is winding down and Fall is on the way.  You know I like to keep in sync with the seasons.  Summer officially ends September 22, 2012.  So let's make the best of the remaining summer days.

According to Ayurvedic practices, we are winding down the season of fire and water: Pitta.

Considered by many scholars to be the oldest healing science, Ayurveda is a holistic approach to health that is designed to help people live long, healthy, and well-balanced lives. The basic principle of Ayurveda is to prevent and treat illness by maintaining balance in the body, mind, and consciousness through proper hydration, diet, and lifestyle, as well as herbal remedies. Increased heat can bring imbalance to the Pitta Dosha. Here are a few ideas to keep you balanced during the summer months:

Daily Routine:
  • Practice sports or asana in the early morning when temperatures are cooler.
  • Wear light colored clothing, loose cotton, linen to allow air to flow between your clothes and your skin.
Eating:
  • Sweet, juicy fruits like; melons, plums, and peaches.
  • Reduce or eliminate alcohol and caffeine.
  • Add digestive spices to your food such as cumin, coriander, fennel and turmeric.
  • Limit hot, spicy, fermented, salty, oily, fried foods.
In the Summer yoga practice should be quieting, cooling, and calming. If you noticed a strong desire to spend most of the time in your last class in Child’s pose, your intuition is guiding you in the right direction. When trying to balance the doshas, remember that “like” increases “like”. Hot Pitta will be aggravated by high temperatures and any sort of fast movement. In other words, yoga class done in a heated room or at a fast pace may be too aggravating to Pitta.

Also read:  Skype YogaFlava - Customized And Personal Sessions

The slower the movement, the less agitating to the body and mind. Calming music can be helpful, as well.

Remember: any movement practiced with great awareness can be calming and balancing for inflamed Pitta. Focus on keeping your attention internally in your body in every asana and every transition between the asanas. Strive for achieving relaxed effort in all your  postures, relax all the muscles that are not critical in holding the pose, especially your face, neck, and shoulders. Allow your breath to lead you from one pose to the next one, not your logical mind.
Ayurveda says that an out of balance pitta may manifest as impatience, aggressiveness, self-criticism, intensity and competitiveness. The adoption of a relaxed, non-hurried, gentle and patient attitude to yoga practice will definitely have a very positive effect. Shift your focus to observing and enjoying the process instead of striving to achieve a specific goal.

Asanas that help balance Pitta are those that place pressure on the naval and solar plexus region, in the small intestine where Pitta resides. There should be enough calming poses included to sedate irritation, anger, and intensity caused by Pitta. In general all forward bends, side stretches, twists, backbends that stretch muscles in your stomach will be beneficial.

Ayurveda, the knowledge or science of life, was based in India over 5,000 years ago. Its foundation is based on the five elements; air, earth, water, fire and ether and plays an essential part of this holistic self-healing system.  Pitta, one of the doshas in Ayurveda, is made up of  two elements: fire and water. It is responsible for digestion and transformation in the body and mind.
Pitta characteristics, on a physical level, tend to manifest in people of medium build,  with hair that is fine or early graying, and with fair or sensitive skin. Pitta people are sharp and determined in thought, speech and action. They get things done!  There is an element of  intensity in their eyes and their voice. Ambition is usually their second nature. They see things clearly, and can problem solve naturally. They make great organizers, leaders, lawyers and orators. Self-confidence and an entrepreneurial spirit are hallmarks of balanced Pitta.

Signs that Pitta is out of balance:
  • Are you often critical, impatient, irritable of others (or of yourself)?
  • Do you feel like you “will” each day to get as much done as possible?
  • Do you feel obsessed by work or a project and unable to stop for a break?
  • Do you have problems with heartburn or excess stomach acid?
  • Are you easily angered or frustrated?
  • Do you often feel hungry? thirsty?
  • Is your speech often sarcastic or sharp tongued?
Yoga is a wonderful tool to use for the Pitta person (actually for every person). It can help balance what tends to be an overactive mind and body.  Here are some yoga poses that would work well if you are want to balance this specific dosha.
Yoga Poses to balance the Pitta aspect:
  • Before starting your yoga practice, take a few minutes to begin with breath-work. Start by allowing the exhale to be longer than the inhale.  This will cool the heat that is coming from your belly/agni.
  • Don’t try to make it a competition, keep it fun.
  • Work at 80% of the effort, so that you are not too intense in your practice.
  • Choose cooling postures, forward bends, twists, side openings and make the practice more of a flow.
  • Use a soft gaze that is level to the horizon;  keeps pitta eyes cool.
  • Practice in a moderately cool place and during cooler times of the day.  Hot yoga, will only heat and aggravate a pitta imbalance more.
  • Use the exhalation to release any stress, anger, critical thinking or frustration.
  • Less is more for pitta people!!!
  • Practice with this in mind: breath based flow as opposed to more alignment-based poses.
  • Avoid holding long inverted poses as that can create a lot of heat in the head.
  • Try poses that release heat from the solar plexus such as pigeon, camel, bow, fish, cobra or bridge poses.
  • For standing poses it is best to open the hips with tree pose, warrior or half moon.
  • But most of all? have fun!
